Detroit emergency manager on the way: Michigan Democrats call it 'hostile takeover', The Michigan Democratic Party responded harshly to Gov. Rick Snyder's announcement this afternoon that an emergency manager is on the way for Detroit.
“Today, Governor Snyder has decided to unilaterally take over control of the City of Detroit from its democratically elected leaders," said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lon Johnson in a statement. Reported Mlive.com...
"This is nothing but a hostile take-over; we would expect this from a CEO, but not from a Governor."
Party officials said Detroit's problems can only be solved "with everyone at the table" and requires trust in the Democratic process.
“This is a hostile take-over," Johnson said. "This overthrow of the democratic process is a deeply disappointing moment in our state’s history."
Snyder while talking to reporters after his noon announcement said he expects an emergency manager to involve local officials in bringing ideas for solutions to Detroit's financial and service troubles.
"I don't view this as one person solving all the problems," he said.
Gov. Snyder says this is one of the hardest decision he has had to make as governor.
He credits Detroit's mayor and council for work, "I want to give them credit for having worked on plans or having ideas but they weren't going to sufficient to solve the problem." Snyder believes bringing new resources to the table is needed while working with the mayor and council.
