The Honda Classic is just another tournament on the PGA Tour schedule—nothing flashy about it. But to McIlroy, this tournament was his for the taking because he is just that close to claiming the No. 1 player in the world golf rankings.......bleacherreport.
He currently sits behind Luke Donald on the rankings list heading into the final round of the Honda Classic, which he will presumably be at or near the top of at the end of the third round.
McIlroy has shown us his game over the past year or so and how he is destined to become one of the best to play this game over the next 15-20 years. His performance at the 2011 U.S. Open shocked many and put him on a list of legitimate up-and-coming stars, except that he has confirmed that he is just that.
Even more, he is competing on the top of the leaderboard on the PGA Tour—something that many thought would test his golf game severely.
He will be in range of winning on Sunday at the Honda Classic, and unlike many, he is not apt to falling down the leaderboard when the competition is on. In fact, he leads the competition in final-round play with clutch shots in pressure-filled moments, as we have seen in the past.
Sunday in Florida is McIlroy's moment to make a statement to the PGA Tour that he is not only the next big thing in the sport, but the biggest thing right now, as well.
